This two part cover concept for The New York Times Magazine visualizes parallel realities within the climate crisis. Issue One presents an imagined world untouched by global warming, using animal silhouettes filled with thriving natural environments to evoke an alternate ecological timeline. Issue Two contrasts this vision with a harsher reality, silhouettes now contain imagery of wildfires, pollution, melting ice, and environmental collapse.
Across both covers, the recurring animal forms reference species most affected by environmental change, while shifting color palettes—calm blues versus urgent reds—reinforce the narrative progression. I developed the headline, concept, and full visual direction to create a paired editorial statement on environmental loss and unrealized possibility.
